Week 19: Laughter
Posted onWhen I sat down on the train in Singapore, glad to finally take the weight off my blistered and battered feet, I saw something across the aisle which made me smile. I took a sneaky picture, firing from the hip so as not to alert the subjects to what I was doing and therefore ruin the naturalness of it. It is a skill I have perfected over many years of basically being a sneaky sort of sod and taking pictures where people would not always appreciate me doing so.

Week 18: Sky
Posted onAlthough I left getting my Week 18 picture for my Project52 to practically the last second, I remain reasonably pleased with how it turned out, though it does … Read more Week 18: Sky

Week 17: Framed
Posted onThe reason I had chosen Surin Beach for the field test is a very sad one. The military government currently in power in Thailand has decided that any and all business anywhere near the beach (any beach, at least in Phuket) are now illegal. Strictly speaking, the beaches are all public land and they had the relatively reasonable idea that no one should be making money with land they don’t own. That part is understandable, though it did result in the removal of all the beach chairs, which has created a lot of complaining online.

Week 16: Water
Posted onMy plan had been to repeat the massively successful shooting of Songkran in Chiang Mai last year. Having previously read somewhere (I forget where, sadly) that “if the end of your lens isn’t wet, you’re not close enough,” I had decided that I wanted to get in really close for some great action shots of the water throwing. From this was born the Songkran Camera Protector Mk.1 – a sealable sandwich bag with a hole ripped in the end for the lens, held in place by the lens hood.

Week 14: Hidden
Posted onThe picture I ended up using was, like Week 13’s “technology” shot, one which I repurposed from a work assignment. I was sent to review Chomchan by One Chun Restaurant in Phuket Town, which proved to be a tasty endeavour. I obviously cannot write a full review here without risking a conflict of interest, but I will say that it was very enjoyable and is a highly recommendable place.

Week 13: Technology
Posted onThe shot I am actually using for the Project52 was taken literally just in passing. I was on my way to the main provincial office of the Thai Revenue Department to collect a copy of my tax receipt (yes, I pay tax in Thailand. It is one of the fundamental differences between a tourist and an expat. I’ll go into the experience in more detail in another post). As I was driving there, I passed the recently-opened King Power Mall and remembered that I needed some shots of it for work.

Week 12: Silhouette
Posted onWhen it came to Week 12 of my Project52 and the theme (or style) of “Silhouette”, I returned to an idea I’d actually had during Week 4, when the … Read more Week 12: Silhouette

Week 11: Texture
Posted onThis is the first time where I have the opportunity to combine a Project52 write-up with a model shoot write-up! As it happened, several of the shots I took during the shoot coincided with the theme of the week – Texture – so all I had to do was pick the one I thought said it best. Some would call that laziness and a cop-out. I call it “efficient”.
